Join Earth Hour 2009
28 Mar
Today at 20.30 I will join millions of people around the world to turn off the light for 1 hour.
This is not only saving energy for an hour but an action to call the attentions of ordinary people, businessmen, manufacturers and the politicians or lawmakers to think and make policies to reduce energy consumption.
This initiative was started in 2007 in Sydney and it grew significantly as of this moment the are 72 cities in 62 countries are participating.

December this year, the world leaders are gathering in Copenhagen for the Global Climate Conference to make some serious decisions about our future, and about global warming. So join the earth connect and write something about earth. We have all the rights to demand our leaders to make policies to stop the deterioration of the very place we live in the EARTH. Blog about this not only today but until the Climate Conference and tag vote earth.
The future Buildings designs will be more Sustainable and fulfill the energy requirements. In Denmark in compliance to the EU directive revised the Building Regulation which is implemented last year. The Directive is to classify the building according to classification so when you apply a building permit it is not only the Structural they look but most important if that building fulfills the energy requirement in consideration of daylight, lighting, ventilation, heat etc but also consideration of the local climate situation is taken into account like Northern Europe local conditions is different from the South. England was the first to implement the EU Energy Performance Directive.
This is a bold move for the governments because this means more investment just to cite an example in
The thickness of insulation for external wall in the old BR is 125mm thick but on the new requirement is to use 175mm
It will be very technical just to explain about the heat losses and energy frame but the total point of the Energy Preformance Directive is to save energy which can be illustrate in simple calculations:
Did you know that a building complying with the requirements of BR 82 uses approximate 10 liters of oil/m2
while in BR 92 uses approximately 7.5 liters of oil/m2
And the New BR 2008 uses approximately 5.5 liters of oil/m2
I ought to discuss more about that in other post and I have to study it further.
Regulations is a good and effective way to minimize Global Warming but all of us should be aware of and contribute. Below is my thoughts
- Join the Earth Hour today
- Change our light bulbs to energy savings bulbs
- Turn off electrical appliances when not in use on standby uses also energy
- Change appliances like Refrigerators, freezers, washing machine, dishwasher to be energy class
- Learn to use the battery of our laptops remember that not using it reduces the lifespan which sometimes I forgot about it.
- Check the tightness of your dwelling or houses maybe you losing precious heat during winter thats so expensive.
- Don’t wash clothes in high temperatures
- Sort you garbages bottles, plastic, batteries, cartons, paper etc. should be sorted out so they will not be burned and add more Co2
- In the Philippines we always iron our clothes but now I don’t iron t shirts or ordinary clothes just the polo shirts and for party or office clothes. Well I usually buys iron free pants and shirts.
- As much as possible avoid drying clothes in the tumbler.
- Filipinos eat rice most of the time I still do but Rice cookers are biggest suckers of energy so I seldom use it except during for emergencies.
I learn about earth hour from Bloggers Unite and This will be my entry to the earth hour event.

This was an excellent move and the event is indeed important. I wish the message behind it will be understood by the leaders.
Well I hope too.
Hi Ana thanks for the visit on my blog.
Btw, the Philippines contributed the most number of participants who switched off their lights. Even big establishments joined it was a dark night for awhile but was worth it.
Yes Earth I saw that in the TV here you it’s good that many contributed with this event.
Some of my neighbours joined, some did not. I turned off our lights, except in the living room. Soon we will be using the low energy bulbs, too. It’s good to be aware of our climate change and contribute something for a cause.
